Lara Community Care Chemist in Victoria, was transformed from a former radiology site into a modern, purpose-built community pharmacy designed to support the evolving role of pharmacy healthcare.
Previously divided into more than 12 separate rooms, the existing tenancy required a complete internal reconfiguration. Working closely with the owners, Pharmacium reimagined the 148m² site into an open, highly functional pharmacy that balances workflow efficiency, clinical service delivery and customer experience.
From the outset, the vision for Lara Community Care Chemist was clear — create a welcoming community pharmacy that could support expanded healthcare services while remaining efficient for the day-to-day demands of dispensing and retail operations.
The layout design opens up the footprint dramatically, replacing the segmented feel of the previous radiology clinic with clear sightlines, intuitive customer flow and a bright, contemporary atmosphere. Natural timber finishes, clean lines and thoughtful zoning create a calm and approachable environment for patients and staff alike.
A key focus of the project was ensuring the pharmacy could comfortably support the growing demand for clinical services, vaccinations and expanded scope consultations.
To achieve this, the design incorporates two dedicated consultation rooms, providing private, professional spaces for patient care. These rooms support vaccinations, medication reviews and a broad range of full scope pharmacy services, allowing the team to deliver healthcare in a confidential and comfortable environment.
Converting a radiology clinic into a community pharmacy presented unique design challenges. The original tenancy consisted of numerous small rooms and enclosed spaces that limited visibility and movement throughout the site.
Pharmacium’s design approach focused on completely reworking the internal layout to maximise openness, improve circulation and create stronger operational flow between retail, dispensary and consultation areas.
The result is a pharmacy that feels significantly larger than its footprint, with a practical layout that supports both customer engagement and efficient staff workflows.
